Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch launched in India at Rs 28,500

Samsung finally launched Gear S3, successor to its Gear S2 smartwatch, in India on Tuesday. The South Korean company's smartwatch comes in two variants - Frontier and Classic.



The Gear S3 was first showcased by the company at IFA 2016 trade show in Berlin.The Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch has been finally launched in India for a price of Rs 28,500.

Samsung on Tuesday launched its Gear S3 smartwatch in India as it looks to go head-to-head with Apple in the premium smartwatch segment. The Gear S3 has retained the circular look..the Gear S3 will be available for pre-order is started January 10, 8PM. Samsung will start shipping the Gear S3 starting January 18.

Just like the Gear S2, the Gear S3 is also available in two variants: Classic and FrontierWhile the Classic should appeal to those looking for a more minimalistic design, the Frontier has been designed for users with more active lifestyles. The company has brought both the variants to India.

With smart capabilities and sophisticated, elegant design, the Gear S3 marks a significant addition to our smartwatch portfolio."

The  was initially launched at IFA 2016 by Samsung and runs company's own Tizen OS instead of Android Wear by Google. The Frontier model of Gear S3 sports a rugged design with a MIL-STD-810G rating, while the Classic variant has a more refined look. Both sport cases made out of high-end watch grade 316L steel, and the company is touting the rotating bezel that enables user to pick up calls or snooze alarms without even touching the display.

Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch comes with a 1.3-inch Super AMOLED display with a 360x360 pixels resolution which is protected by Corning's Gorilla Glass SR+ panel, specifically designed for wearables. The USP of the smartwatch is said to be its Full Colour Always-On Display mode taken from Samsung's Galaxy range phones which, according to Samsung, allows the screen to display 16 million colours even during sleep mode.

At the given price of Rs 28,500, the Gear S3 competes with the likes of Fossil Marshall, priced at Rs 21,999, Motorola’s Moto 360 (2nd gen) at Rs 20,999, Huawei Watch starts at Rs 22,999 and Asus Zenwatch 3, which is priced at Rs 18,999.

The Tizen OS-powered smartwatches also differ in terms of connectivity on offer. The Gear S3 Classic comes with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity while the Gear S3 Frontier variant offers LTE support along with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Successor to the Gear S2, the Gear S3 range features a circular bezel and has IP68 certification which makes it water and dust resistant.

The smartwatch is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor paired with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. Keeping the Gear S3 ticking is a 380mAh battery which is claimed to make the smartwatch run for up to four days on a single charge.
